This is the first joint concert for the two ensembles.\n\nSelections being performed by the Atlanta Wind Symphony:\n• The Cowboys by John Williams – An exciting Western overture – full of the brilliant effects\, rhythmic drive\, and lyrical themes that are the hallmarks of a John Williams work – depicting the joys and hardships of cowboy life.\n• English Dances by Malcolm Arnold – Every theme in these boisterous\, good-humored dances is original with Arnold\, with a mastery of instrumentation evident throughout the composition.\n• Rhapsody for Alto Saxophone by Andre Waignein\, featuring soloist Everest Li – A work that spontaneously turns into a natural musical journey and showcases both the technical prowess and the expressive nature of the saxophone.\n• One Life Beautiful by Julie Giroux – An impressionistic work musically describing how having only one life is what makes life so sacred\, tragic\, and precious.\n\nSelections being performed by the Hiram High School Wind Symphony:\n• Urban Light by James David – A brilliant display of colors\, forward momentum\, and intertwining rhythmic layers that is inspired by the iconic Los Angeles landmark of the same name.\n• Dum Spiro Spero by Chris Pilsner – The composer’s goal was to write something as deeply emotional and human as the title\, which means ‘While I breathe\, I hope.’ Simple melodies supported by colorful orchestration and harmonies gives the piece a powerful sense of grace and splendor.\n• Kaleidoscope Eyes by Katahj Copley – The composer writes: “Kaleidoscope eyes is a visual effect – creating mirages\, splashes of colors\, and moments of confusion. When [learning about the term]\, I knew what I wanted to do: manipulate rhythm and color changes within the wind band.”\n\nSelection by the combined ensembles:\n• The March from “1941” by John Williams – One of Mr. Williams’ most requested titles from his distinguished career in film music\, this jaunty march is a fun-filled romp from beginning to end\, skillfully conceived with tuneful strains\, rousingly aggressive brass writing\, and superb orchestration.

DESCRIPTION:The Atlanta Wind Symphony’s community outreach programs include inviting outstanding high school ensembles to share the stage. This is the first joint concert for the two groups. \nSelections being performed by the Atlanta Wind Symphony: \n\nZing! by Scott McAllister – The first work in a series of short band pieces inspired by catchphrases of different band directors who influenced the composer in high school and college. These phrases were often used during rehearsals to illuminate an image in order to create a special sound.\nSweet Chariot by Carlos Simon – The composer writes: Swing Low\, Sweet Chariot is perhaps one of the most well-known African American spirituals. However\, its beauty and popularity is often overlooked by the song’s true meaning about death. I have taken fragments of the melody and combined it with the Gregorian chant from the Latin Mass for the dead\, In Paradisum.\nJuba Dance by Florence Price – Enslaved individuals introduced the Juba dance\, which originated in Haiti and Africa\, into the southern colonies\, later influencing hambone and ragtime. Florence Price aimed to elevate the African American folk dance into concert halls by boldly replacing the traditional minuet/scherzo with the Juba in each of her three surviving symphonies.\nGive Us This Day (Short Symphony) by David Maslanka – The composer writes: The words “give us this day” are\, of course\, from the Lord’s Prayer\, but the inspiration for this music is Buddhist [from the] premise that a future for the planet is only possible if individuals become deeply mindful of themselves\, deeply connected to who they really are. For me\, writing music and working with people to perform music are two of those points of deep mindfulness.\n\nThe Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony will present “Reel Music:” \n\nGrand Canyon Fanfare by James Newton Howard – From the 1991 movie\, Grand Canyon\, this piece uses brass-heavy writing to convey the grandeur of one of our greatest national treasures.\nTombstone by Bruce Broughton – The 1993 western film\, Tombstone\, tells the tale of the legendary gunfight at the O.K. Corral. This adaptation for band features the primary themes in a bold and impressive concert setting.\nThe Red Pony by Aaron Copland – This popular work is in the composer’s folk-like and accessible nationalistic American style.\nFar and Away by John Williams (arr. Paul Lavender) – Drawing on the rich tradition of Irish music as inspiration\, John Williams uses original themes\, but in an Irish style\, in creating a sweeping film score that beautifully captures and enhances the moods portrayed in the film.

The concert will be held at 8:00 p.m. at the Chattahoochee High School Auditorium (5230 Taylor Road\, Johns Creek\, GA 30022). \nSelections being performed:\n• Festive Overture by Dmitri Shostakovich – This excellent concert opener exhibits one of Shostakovich’s greatest attributes: the skill in writing a long sustained melodic line combined with a pulsating rhythmic drive.\n• Enigma by David Biedenbender – Enigma comes from a Greek word meaning “to speak in riddles\,” and the piece’s riddle or theme\, derived from a work by Bach that is one of the composer’s favorite pieces of music\, is revealed gradually.\n• Ash by Jennifer Jolley – The composer shares that\, after witnessing her first ash-fall when she was in elementary school in Southern California\, she couldn’t comprehend how an enormous forest fire could create a small flurry of ash-flakes. Now she has the ominous understanding that something so magical and beautiful comes from something so powerful and destructive.\n• The Sacred Spheres by Tyler S. Grant – This large-scale work for the wind band was commissioned to honor Professor Randall O. Coleman for his 30+ year career in music education. Coleman’s interest in John Dryden’s poem\, A Song for St. Cecilia’s Day\, served as the composer’s starting point as he focuses on the musical and celestial forces being abstractly represented through music.\n• Dreaming of the Masters III by Allan Gilliland\, with Jens Lindemann\, trumpet soloist – This three-movement jazz suite for trumpet and orchestra was originally written for Jens Lindemann\, who has performed this work around the world\, including its U.S. premiere at Carnegie Hall in 2012.\n• Danza Final from “Estancia” by Alberto Ginastera – This concluding movement of the suite\, Estancia\, is inspired by the flamboyant malambo dance of the Argentine gauchos and has become one of Ginastera’s most popular works. \nDonation information:\nWhile the concert is free\, tax-deductible donations are appreciated and accepted at the concert\, via mail\, or online. This work is built from four Shaker melodies – a sensuous nature song\, a lively dance tune\, a tender lullaby\, and most famously\, “Simple Gifts\,” the hymn that celebrates the Shaker’s love of simplicity and humility.\n\nSelections by the combined ensembles:\n• A Festive Christmas by Kenny Bierschenk – Resplendent sounds of the season burst through in Bierschenk’s stunning medley of familiar Christmas tunes\, with clever scoring and a joyful feel.\n• Sleigh Ride by Leroy Anderson – The composer formed the original idea for this beloved holiday favorite during a heat wave in July 1946.
