John Dean’s “Cool Clear Hydrosphere” is a photo series that describes in still life form the mystery of the most precious and powerful life force on the planet\, water\, the element that shapes our landscape and makes all terrestrial life possible. Jennifer Mckinnon’s “Organic Landscapes” is a tribute to the establishment of our National Parks System through digitally and physically collaged photographs and materials that draw attention to our human impact on the environment. Mary Stuart Walker’s “A Momentary Territory” documents our dynamic sky while standing on the continental divide\, using cyanotypes framed in an unnatural boundary – a circle – capturing a fleeting new territory that only exists in the image.

SUMMARY:ECHOES
DESCRIPTION:Spalding Nix Fine Art is pleased to present ECHOES\, four solo shows by Caroline Bullock\, Sachi Rome\, Lizzy Storm and Blair Hobbs. \nAn echo reflects and reverberates from a source. It repeats\, but is only reminiscent of the original\, not an exact copy. It is transient\, changing and intangible. \nThe Artists in this show have created distinct bodies of work exploring themes akin to an echo. Inspired by the 13th century poet Rumi\, Caroline Bullock’s “This Place is a Dream” ruminates on the transient and illusory nature of the physical world\, creating imagined landscapes using cyanotypes\, plants from her garden\, paint\, and paper. Exploring the layered histories of the South\, Sachi Rome’s “Liminal Space\,” is a series of abstract works that imagine in-between spaces as sites of possibility\, inviting viewers to meditate on the thresholds between the tangible and intangible. Referencing images etched and painted on stone from the Paleolithic Era\, Lizzy Storm’s series of earth pigment works on paper titled “Lithomancy\,” reflects on the traces of human intervention in the environment and our place in the worlds of Nature. Blair Hobbs’ latest series of narrative mixed media collages\, “Birthday Cake For Flannery\,” is a celebration of the life and writings of the renowned Georgia author\, Flannery O’Connor\, as well as a reckoning with Flannery’s complicated characters and Blair’s own journey.

DESCRIPTION:Spalding Nix Fine Art proudly presents FORGING AHEAD\, a presentation of four solo shows by Heather Bird Harris\, Andrew Herzog\, Robert Hightower and Jamie Bourgeois. \n‘Forging’ is defined as the act of making or shaping a metal object with heat; the act of creating a relationship or new conditions; or to produce a copy or imitation of something for the purpose of deception. ‘Forging ahead’ is to make quick progress\, moving boldly against resistance. \nMarking the first exhibition of 2025\, the artists in this show examine our history and our impacts on the planet and one another\, creating work that informs how we might move forward to shape our future. Heather Bird Harris’s series of new paintings “love as large as grief demands” transforms mapped industrial scars in Georgia and Louisiana into regenerative landscapes made with site-specific materials. Andrew Herzog’s “Day(‘)s End” is a series of rock pigment and mixed media paintings that meditate on the residues left by human activity—material\, cultural and temporal—and the ways in which they inform the landscapes of the present and future. Robert Hightower’s “Icons of the Toybox” is a series of oil and enamel paintings that reflect on the mass production and marketing of non-essential products starting in the 1950s\, inaugurating our transition from basic capitalism to ‘American Consumerism.’ Jamie Bourgeois’s “Petrochemical PLANTS” is a series of earth pigment & assemblage paintings that explore the pervasive and insidious nature of plastics and petrochemicals as they disrupt and accumulate in ecosystems and in our bodies. \nJanuary 17 – March 7\nOpening Reception – Friday\, January 17\, 6 – 8 p.m. & Saturday\, January 18\, 12 – 4 p.m.

Her work is informed by perception\, memory\, available materials & the willingness to take risks in conveying what she sees in the natural world with gestural marks on paper. At times Heather transforms the representational figure into more of an abstraction\, but is always driven by elements of the subject which she finds beautiful or unique.

DESCRIPTION:IN ESSENCE\nJuly 19 – September 6\nOpening Receptions: Friday\, July 19\, 6 – 8 p.m. & Saturday\, July 20\, 12 – 4 p.m. \nIN ESSENCE features new paintings by Cynthia Knapp\, Criss Mills\, Kate Hooray Osmond\, and Jim Wise. ‘Essence’ is defined as the intrinsic nature or indispensable quality of something. Cynthia Knapp’s abstract works are musings on the inter-relationships of organic structures and an attempt to capture the most important characteristics of our physical environment. A trained architect\, Criss Mills’s geometric abstractions are constructed of entangled fragments with the aim of provoking a dislocation to normative perception. Kate Hooray Osmond’s brightly colored geometric abstractions are explorations of the world’s energy\, portraying a world full of paradox. Jim Wise’s contemporary surrealist paintings of roses are portraits of sublime objects of contemplation and an exploration of the human spirit.

DESCRIPTION:May 17 – July 12 \nOpening Receptions – Friday\, May 17\, 6-8 p.m. & Saturday\, May 18\, 12 – 4 p.m. \n“All In The Golden Afternoon” features new bodies of work by Susan Hable\, Marina Dunbar\, Guy Robinson and Shelby Little. “All In The Golden Afternoon” is a reference to the preface poem in Lewis Carroll’s 1865 book “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” that details the story of a girl named Alice who falls through a rabbit hole into an enchanted world. It is a rule-bound world\, but its rules are not those of our world and she finds herself in situations of contradiction\, absurdity\, nonsense\, and paradox\, but also of magic and everything around her teeming with life. Susan Hable’s “I Remember This” is a step into a similar world\, a daydream of flowers and fantasy through patterned paintings and graphic collage works. Marina Dunbar’s paintings explore the sensory spirit of Spring and resurgence through her layered\, cut\, and reassembled canvases. Guy Robinson’s “Poetry Of Paradox” is a continuation of his practice of “following the muse and working the unsolvable puzzle\,” creating paintings that imbue the magic of seemingly random objects. Shelby Little’s “Lies of Poets” is a colorful homage to the figures in Greek Mythology\, while reminding the viewer of their unseriousness and playfulness. Through vibrant colors\, engulfing compositions\, playful uses of patterns and the pairing of disparate objects\, the artists in this show create and indulge in their own sort of wonderlands of riddles\, paradox and magic!

DESCRIPTION:May 17 – July 12 \nOpening Receptions – Friday\, May 17\, 6-8 p.m. & Saturday\, May 18\, 12 – 4 p.m. \n“All In The Golden Afternoon” features new bodies of work by Susan Hable\, Marina Dunbar\, Guy Robinson and Shelby Little. “All In The Golden Afternoon” is a reference to the preface poem in Lewis Carroll’s 1865 book “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” that details the story of a girl named Alice who falls through a rabbit hole into an enchanted world. It is a rule-bound world\, but its rules are not those of our world and she finds herself in situations of contradiction\, absurdity\, nonsense\, and paradox\, but also of magic and everything around her teeming with life. Susan Hable’s “I Remember This” is a step into a similar world\, a daydream of flowers and fantasy through patterned paintings and graphic collage works. Marina Dunbar’s paintings explore the sensory spirit of Spring and resurgence through her layered\, cut\, and reassembled canvases. Guy Robinson’s “Poetry Of Paradox” is a continuation of his practice of “following the muse and working the unsolvable puzzle\,” creating paintings that imbue the magic of seemingly random objects. Shelby Little’s “Lies of Poets” is a colorful homage to the figures in Greek Mythology\, while reminding the viewer of their unseriousness and playfulness. Through vibrant colors\, engulfing compositions\, playful uses of patterns and the pairing of disparate objects\, the artists in this show create and indulge in their own sort of wonderlands of riddles\, paradox and magic!

Trish Andersen’s “Looking Out\, Looking In\,” is a new series of three dimensional tufted works that explore the balance between daydreaming\, being present & finding comfort through change. Gretchen Wagner’s “Color Interaction IV” is a series of mixed media paintings inspired by her curiosity and research on the relativity of color – a love letter to the work of Josef and Anni Albers. Angela Carter’s “Happy Day” reimagines the history of indigo dye in the American South\, coined ‘Blue Gold\,’ through a series of abstract mixed media paintings. Amanda Brazier’s handmade paint and paper works “The Birds Are My Prayer” are an attempt to cultivate her own sense of listening by examining bird sonograms and bird calls.

Meaning-making is the process of how people construe\, understand\, or make sense of life events\, relationships\, and the self. As humans\, our deeply fundamental motivation is to make sense of the world around us. Everyday we consciously and unconsciously assign meaning to the symbols\, objects\, and events that we experience. If the primary motivation of a person is to discover meaning in life\, then is Art the ultimate sign? Esteban Patino’s latest series Riddle explores the functions and structures of language\, and the production and communication of meaning. Shannon Davis’ Controlled Burn conceptual photographs challenge what it means to be a “True Southerner.” Erin Dixon’s Souvenir studies our evolution of systems of meaning through memory\, while Susan Lenz’s Found Object Mandalas show us that meaning can be created under all circumstances.

The theory of quantum entanglements states that when two particles become entangled\, they remain connected even when separated by vast distances. \nWorking collaboratively\, Carlyle Wolfe Lee and Thad Lee’s “Repeat the Sounding Joy\,” is a body of work made in tandem\, through painting and photography\, that explores their mutual delight in the natural world and within their own marriage. Spencer Sloan’s ongoing practice of manipulating paparazzi photographs into digital abstractions intertwines the concepts of celebrity obsessions\, invasion of privacy and the complex issues of ownership of an image. Virginie Drujon-Kippelen’s photo series\, “Aliens\, Invasives and Other Entanglements\,” explores the complicated connections that exist in our disturbed urban landscapes\, where native and alien species compete–a possible metaphor for our own issues of national identity and nativism.

SUMMARY:Spalding Nix showing new work by four artists
DESCRIPTION:LAYER-BY-LAYER at Spalding Nix Fine Art features new work by Katherine Sandoz\, Scotty Peek\, Susan Maakestad and David Boyd. Layered in each painting are investigations of place\, of history and of context\, and also of paint and of painting. Katherine Sandoz’s “uhuru” draws upon the landscape of Maui. Scotty Peek’s “There & Not” uses his heavily wooded Southern surroundings to create paintings that are both specific and general. Susan Maakestad’s “Splendid Day” turns to the urban landscape\, attracted to the spaces between things and the unnoticed marginal spaces. David Boyd’s “Ensemble” includes a selection of both urban landscapes and interior scenes. The paintings in this show are held together by the layering of shapes\, lines and colors\, by the layering of leaves\, sidewalks\, and rocks\, and by the layering of meaning\, memory and history. Opening reception is Saturday\, May 13 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Runs through July 7.
